Dave: Sky Pilot

Trip Notes
Sunday, October 6th, 2002

We want to extend another warm thank you to Ken and Brandi for their Sheehan hospitality.
It was sure nice to get off the road and hang out in a nice warm house with a bottomless beer glass.
It was great!

Today was a classic cycling day! Yes I complained about the wind all day, mostly in my face, 30 km/h. N.W., but otherwise it was day full of white church steeples silhouetted against the blue sky, deep blue sea panoramas, pastoral fishing villages, and endless farms rolling their way down to the sea. The north shore wind was icy, and the first 30 km. were an endless roller coaster ride of relatively short steep hills. All of the scenic ocean inlets are dotted with the markers of netting where locals are “cultivating” seafood.

Aqua-culture looks like a growth industry here, as locals have been severely limited in what and how much they can catch from the open sea. The scenic coasts of distant Hog, Lennox, and Birds Islands were in clear view for nearly an hour as we trundled up and down the coastal hills.

Road Kill

I know everyone’s been waiting for the road kill report. There is a different kind of raccoon here than those we commonly see in Ontario. These are mangy looking things with stripes only on their underside. From the back they look like a cross between a hedgehog and a porcupine. They are shorter in the body and have tufted sort of ears. There was a spate of at least 15 of them within a 30 km. stretch – the only coons I’ve seen before or since.

Also spotted today – one starfish – go figure! So far, at least 25 snakes. [I always think snakes are going to jump up and latch onto my bike as I ride by] I hit the same snake twice today as he was sitting in a U shape on the road and well, use your imagination. The crickets here are big and make quite a pop when you run over then dead-on. Some crickets must have been destined to be run over by Dave’s Ride, as they seem to crave the rubber. Saw two live foxes that were very beautiful compared to their generally mangy looking counterparts

More Island Culture

We rode almost all day and only found a place to get me a Dr. pepper at the 120 km. mark as we ended today’s ride. EVERYTHING is closed on Sunday around here. The gas prices are HIGH! There are pockets of different churches along the coast. In this order, counterclockwise: Free Scotland Church, United, Presbyterian, Catholic, more Catholic, and then Anglican …

Anne of Green Gables

Due to the endless hills and wind the average sped was a very slow 19.9 km./hr. In comparison, I often average about 27 on a “normal” ride of this distance.

Tomorrow.
