Trip
Notes
Tuesday, October 8th, 2002
Last
night we stayed within eyesight of the wind generator farm.
Awoke several times in the night to hear gusts of wind howling around
the cabin. It was 6 deg C when 6:30 am arrived. As Romax
was caked with red dirt I had planned to clean him before starting
out today, but as I wheeled him out into the pre-dawn light, I reached
down to give the tires their morning squeeze and was shocked find
the rear tire was flat. @#*k ! The first patch attempt
failed and I had to repeat the entire procedure. Lost 40 minutes
by the time it was done.

|
| Late
to start, we tried breakfast at a local restaurant and I washed
down two fried eggs, home fries, and toast
with apple juice and two coffees. I predicted this would
make my stomach burn when I started to ride - it did. It usually wears
off after an hour and a half or so, and it did. |

Well,
it's About Time!!
Hallelujah,
a superb day of cycling, the kind
of day that you don't want to forget! Had about 60% favourable winds
today [30-40 km, W.] and when it was good it was really good.
Managed 130 km. on the nose at a reasonable 24.7 km/h average. Rode
most of the day hugging the very scenic west coast line, and watching
the white horses roll in. Got a few choice whiffs of
sea air, and for some reason the smell of the "Acadian Fisherman's"
Fish Packing plant made me think of China ...

Just
Ask the Locals...
Culture:
This area has a French speaking Acadian population. The French
they speak is quite different, and they have incorporated a lot
of English words into their dialect. These words weave quite naturally
into their sentences. I am told that the Acadians are a nation
within a province. [This was actually said in reference to
New Brunswick.] Regardless, they are mostly Canadian nationalists
and not separatists. This area has a different look, with lots of
French signs and some very impressive churches.

Butt
Seriously...
Lots
of people ask if my fanny gets sore when I ride. Actually
I must have been blessed with a hard tail, as soreness has never
been an issue for me, no matter how far I go. However the proper
choice of seat, padded riding pants, and generous amounts of Penaten
applied in the right places help greatly. The main cause of soreness
is the seat rubbing on the inside of the legs or butt that causes
chafing.
